Join "cartophile" Karen Arp-Sandel to learn how she integrates maps as a collage element to transform memory into artistic expression. Study the components that compose a map. Invent your own map based on life experience, travel, or memoir. The class includes individual and collaborative projects to explore dimensional, textural collage with drawing, stitching, and text. Use of found materials, canvas substrate, acrylics, image transfers and other mixed media materials are demonstrated in class. Students are encouraged to make use of unique personal ephemera, as well.

In this dynamic collage class, students attracted to painting learn to create brilliant hand painted papers that are used to compose a painterly, textural combination collage. During this course, students are guided through a specific project exercising skills in design, drawing, scale , painting and collage using one of my favorite techniques, “painted paper collage.” Students are invited to choose a favorite subject to interpret using this technique: landscape, portrait, animal or a masterpiece from any era of art history! Each student will complete the class with a unique painted paper collage infused with personal color palette choices and full of self-expression.

Bring your old maps to transform into an Expanding Travel Journal in which we combine accordionfold and pamphlet stitch. Explore the world of Stab Bindings, which come in a great variety of styles and adapt the classical Japanese format to one with recycled paper pages.
